| | چکیده : | This series concerns itself with the history of Europe, not of the world. I have chosen, therefore, to say almost nothing of the war's non-European aspects. The role of the United States cannot be ignored, simply because American power and policy directly penetrated the continent during the war. But the Pacific and Middle Eastern theaters have been left aside, at the risk of distorting a historical epoch of great complexity.
